Brecon Canal

The canal holds a good head of fish: roach, dace, chub, perch and eels are the most common on this  water.  Although skimmer bream have been caught and the occasional carp and pike.  The canal is open all year round for fishing. The water supply comes off the River Usk and when the river is in flood this can improve the quality of the fishing in the canal. Although we have the canal from the basin by the theatre in Brecon to bridge 153 at Pencelli, during the boating season from Easter to the beginning of September, the basin and other places where the boats tend to  tie up can be very busy. We can recommend a roving approach to fishing it for perch with sizable perch there to be caught. Light tackle and sink and draw is a favourite.

Annual tickets – Senior Citizen and Adult £20 Junior (aged 12-16) £15 (this ticket allows you to fish the canal only)

If you see a pollution incident please take a photograph with your phone and ring 03000653000 the photo may be needed to prove the incident took place.

Location & Parking

The water rented by MTAA is from the canal basin in front of the theatre (Ordnance Survey Map Ref 304662, 228218) to Bridge 153 at Pencelli (Ordnance Survey Map Ref 309113, 225090) .

There is a carpark near the theatre which is a pay and display. If you drive around the theatre you will see a bridge and alongside it a pull in – use this to drop your gear off and opposite the pull in are a few car parking spaces which are free. Approach Brecon from the Abergavenny side coming passed the barracks and just before the Morrisons Garage and mini roundabout there is a turning to the left over a canal bridge. Parking is on the left after going over the bridge if you wish to fish to the right you will have to drop your gear off and then park back on the downstream side of the bridge because there are yellow lines in front of the houses. The next parking area is at Brynich Lock, parking here is just under the bridge of the A40 above the lock. This will enable you to fish above and below the lock. The next parking area is at bridge 158 the storehouse on the B4558. The car park is on the right just after going over the canal bridge. The final car parking place is just after going through the village of Pencelli there is a turning on the right take this and follow the canal down to an area which is a boat and canoe launching area. It’s a large area where you can fish with the car behind you, the downside is if canoes or boats are being launched/removed from the water you have to move.
