Sustainability Committee Inquiry – Evidence Session #1 Coverage

MTAA September 29th, 2009

Now that the evidence submission period for open access to all inland water ways in Wales is over, the Sustainability Committee will begin further investigations into the possibility of opening up all waters (free of charge) for the use of paddlers, etc.

Below is the coverage of the first Sus Comm meeting, which took place on the 24th September and at the Senedd in Cardiff. Both the Environment Agency and Canoe Wales presented their cases, and if you are unaware of both the current facts and the opinions and views from both of these bodies, this is well worth watching.

Also worth a huge mention are the updates and information currently available via the Campaign for the Protection of Welsh Fisheries website.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Kelvin Rumble fished Dolygaer on Saturday 26th September for roach on the roadside of the reservoir. Fishing for roach he enjoyed a cracking session with the largest roach weighing just under 2lbs, and a personel best bream weighing 10lb 2oz, all caught on hair rigged sweetcorn and a groundbait feeder with pellet hook bait.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Steven Jacob and Steve Mold fished the lake on the 21st of September; after an early start, and by 10am, had only landed one 4lb carp. They fished through until 6pm without a bite when they landed a 12lb and 8lb common carp, as well as losing two large carp, all within 20 minutes.

Upper Neuadd

John Kinsey fished the Neuadd on the 20th of September and landed 3 brown trout on a Montana nymph, and lost one fish on a damsel fly.

River Taff

The trial for the International Rivers team to represent Wales in 2010 took place on the Taff on Sunday 27th September. It was a hard days fishing but over 100 fish were recorded and returned. Those who won through and have been selected to fish for Wales are, once again, all members of MTAA. They are Philip Jehu, Paul Jenkins, Alan Hughes, Dean Kibble and Anthony Cartwright. New comer Simon Barton is reserve. Well done all!

Penywern Ponds

The lowering of Penywern’s top pond is now well on the way and we are reminding all members to respect the request not to fish the pond. It has come to our notice that several members are still fishing there. You can be of more use if you put your energy into keeping an eye on the pond and stopping other people fishing there.

Three times in the last week members have left the barrier to the member’s car park open. This barrier was put there for your security but it seems that a small minority are too lazy to shut the barrier behind them. The barrier is now closed until work on the pond is complete and the water levels rise.

Special Thanks: Carl Jones at Cefn Tackle

MTAA September 17th, 2009

THANKS FOR THE GRAND EFFORT YOU MADE TO GATHER A RECORD NUMBER OF SIGNATURES FOR THE PLEDGE.

I cannot give you an accurate figure for your collection but I am sure it was in excess of 300.

If only other individuals and business people (tackle dealers) had done what you did, the score (I am sure) would have far exceeded the 7,000 figure so far quoted.

Once again THANK YOU, from myself, and on behalf of the Federation of Welsh Anglers.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

David Jones fished Dolygaer last Saturday and landed around 30lbs of roach, perch, and skimmer bream on a ground bait feeder and maggot hook bait.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Daniel Davies fished the lake on Sunday 13th of September, he used halibut pellets as hook bait to land four carp, the largest weighing 7lbs.

River Taff

Kian Lewis fished the Taff on Monday 14th September at Aberfan; he landed twelve trout on dry flies, the largest weighing approximately 1lb 8oz.

Penywern Ponds

Officers of the Association met with Officers of Merthyr Council and the contractor recently to discuss the replacing of the valve on top Pond. This has to be carried out as the reservoir is within the Reservoirs Safety Act.

The level of the pond will need to be dropped significantly to carry out the work. The council have carried out extensive surveys off the pond bed and have a good profile of the bottom of the lake. It appears that there will be a substantial area of water left in the pond for the fish to survive. We cannot be one hundred percent sure of this and so we are putting in contingency plans if this is not the case.

The draining of the pond will commence on/before Monday 21st September 2009. As soon as draining commences fishing will not be allowed on the Pond.

The work on the valve will start on the 5th October 2009 and the water level will be monitored to ensure that the lake will not empty too quickly.

The Officers of the Council and the Contractor are doing all they can to help us protect the fish.

Further details and updates will be posted on the web site as they arise and in the Merthyr Express.

Catch Returns/Fishing Reports

If anyone has any catch returns or fishing reports that they would like to submit, please contact Julian Burns (Press Officer) on 07850 901 356, or alternatively, email the Association via the Contact Us page.

River Taff Oil Spill

MTAA September 1st, 2009

On Friday 21st August 2009 a member reported to the Association at 7:45pm that he had seen an oil slick on the river at the Old Lines Bridge. As it was going dark the Association were unable to find the source and by the following morning only a small slick was left in a backwater below Lines bridge.

We were unable to justify calling the EA out as it was not possible to find the source. We would urge all members to report all such incidents as soon as seen. Any time lapse means that evidence will be lost.

We wish to thank the member for reporting this issue and we will keep an eye on the area over the next few weeks.
