MTAA Forum Upgrades & Maintenance

MTAA August 27th, 2009

We are pleased to announce that the MTAA web site’s forum, which enables all registered users the ability to discuss MTAA news, tackle advice, post catch reports, etc, has been upgraded.

We have added more functionality to the forum by creating additional discussion areas such as the brand new MTAA River & Lake Reports (which allows users to post catch reports, etc on each of the Association’s waters), Tackle & Equipment Area (which allows users to ask questions or to post reviews on new/old tackle), and lastly, a brand new Classifieds area which will allow users to trade items between themselves (please note that Merthyr Tydfil Angling Association are not responsible for any transaction(s) carried out using this forum or website).

We hope you enjoy the new and improved functionality, however, if you have any queries about the new layout, or if you have any ideas on how we could further improve either our website or forum, please don’t hesitate to contact the Association via the Contact Us page.

MTAA August 25th, 2009

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Nathan Price fished clay bay in Pontsticill last week for pike; he used float fished herring to land one pike weighing 8lb 2oz and ledgered mackerel which landed two pike, the largest weighing 20lb 14oz.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Mark Jones had a good day down the lake; he fished ledgered boillies to land twelve carp, the largest weighing 13lbs.

River Taff

Liam Price fished the river at Quakers Yard fishing upstream and landed 15 brown trout on grey duster dry flies, the largest weighing around 1lb 8oz.

Under 11s – Away Trip to Pen-y-Clawdd Fishery (22/08/2009)

  • 1st Place: Nathan Rees (10lb 1oz)
  • 2nd Place: Nathan Gwyn (4lb 10oz)
  • 3rd Place: Bryn Davies (2lb 3oz)

Overall champion for the under 11s this year is Bryn Davies, well done!

Over 11s – Away Trip to Pen-y-Clawdd Fishery (22/08/2009)

  • 1st Place: Anya Earp (13lb 8oz)
  • 2nd Place: Matthew Maybank (5lb 10oz)
  • 3rd Place: Jack Elliots (5lb 2oz)

Overall champion for the over 11s this year is Matthew Maybank, well done!

Seniors – Cyfarthfa Lake: Cup Name (23/08/2009)

  • 1st Place: Steve Crowley (10lb 12oz)
  • 2nd Place: Ian Cathrew (9lb 4oz)
  • 3rd Place: Bernard Farr (8lb 3oz)

MTAA August 17th, 2009

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

David Lee and Gareth James fished Pontsticill reservoir last Monday for Pike. David Lee landed three pike and, after a large struggle with the fish and using large Mackerel dead baits, David landed his largest fish weighing 17lb 3oz. His next fish weighed 13lb 2oz, and his last weighed 9lb 8oz. Gareth landed one fish weighing 23lb 8oz on float fished lamp ray at around 8ft of depth.

Penywern Ponds

John Hodgeson and Phillip Fear fished Penywern’s top pond on Saturday 15th August. Phillip landed 16 fish, the largest weighing 12lb 7oz, all caught using Tiger nut and boillies. John landed seven fish weighing from 6-13lb 8oz using a ledgered boillie.

Michael Peterson fished Penywern’s middle pond on Monday 17th. Using a float fished maggot with a ground bait and hemp feed, he landed approximately 20lb of fish, the best being a 4lb 8oz Tench.

River Taff

Kevin Roberts fished the river Taff last week at Quakers Yard and managed to land 7 fish, the largest being a 2lb 8oz brown trout, and all caught on a Grey Duster.

Junior Away Trip

Anyone wishing to take part in the junior away trip please meet at the Lakeside Gardens end of Cyfarthfa Park at 07:15am on the 22nd August.

Riverside Parking in Troedyrhiw: Barrier Closing Times

MTAA August 12th, 2009

We wish to inform members that parking by the skip area in Troedyrhiw is only available between 9am and 8pm.

The person manning the area has informed the Association that he had to wait until past 8:30pm one night for a person to return to his car.

His finishing time is 8pm and in future the barrier will be close at this time.

Pontsticill & Dolygaer Reservoirs

These reservoirs have been fishing very well recently; David Lee fished Pontsticill last weekend and landed 80lb of Skimmer Bream on a ground bait feeder and a Worm hook bait after heavily pre-baiting an area the night before.

Shaun Davies landed three Pike on ledgered Mackerel and Herring baits popped up off the bottom.

Penywern Ponds

Stewart Pittman fished the top pond over night on Monday; he used a method feeder and boillie hook bait fished over groats and hemp particle mix to land 13 Common Carp ranging from 3lb to 19lb 6oz.

Upper Neuadd

Granville Dagostini fished a floating line on the Upper Neuadd with a Hare’s ear Nymph and a Coch-y-Bonddu dropper to land four Brown Trout and two Rainbow Trout.

MTAA Responds to Sustainability Committee

MTAA August 11th, 2009

Further to the ongoing Support for Welsh Rivers campaign, the Association has released the following letter to the Welsh Assembly’s Sustainability Committee in response to the Access to All Inland Waters enquiry.

Also available via the below downloads is a link to our Support for Welsh Rivers pledge form. If you are yet to sign a form, we would appreciate any support you are able to provide. Please download a copy of the form and email back to gareth[dot]lewis[at]flyfishinginsouthwales[dot]co[dot]uk. Alternatively, please contact the Association via the Contact Us page is you would like to show your support but do not have printing facilities.

MTAA August 3rd, 2009

Pontsticill & Dolygaer Reservoirs

Daniel Lewis fished dolygaer last week on a method feeder and small boillies; he landed approximately 100lb of bream up to 8lbs in weight. David Lee fished pontsticill for pike last Sunday and landed three fish the largest weighing 14lbs. He landed the fish on ledgered sprats.

Upper Neuadd

John Taylor fished the Neuadd reservoir last Sunday evening and landed three brown trout and two rainbow trout on a damsel fly.

Cyfarthfa Lake

The lake has been fishing very well recently with good bags of fish being caught, Jamie Lewis fished the lake on Monday and landed around 15lb of roach, perch and some rudd. Gavin Davies landed a 17lb 5oz mirror carp on a ledgered boille.

Penywern Ponds

Jamie Osullivan fished Penywern’s top pond and landed 19 carp ranging between 8 and 13lb.

River Usk

The river Usk has been producing a few salmon recently, Glyn Presli landed a 7lb.8oz on a spinner, Derek Kerri landed a 7lb salmon and three sea trout, Emriys Bow landed a 12lb salmon on a worm, Nigel Morgan caught and returned a 9lb salmon on a fly, Mr Barrat also landed a 9lb salmon on a worm, Richard Hillman has landed five salmon the largest weighing 18lb which he caught on a worm all the fish taken from our Kemeys fishery. Colin Saunders landed a 10lb salmon on a worm from the Mardy fishery and Antony John landed a 13lb salmon on a spinner, also from the Mardy fishery.

With high water on the rivers we can hope for a good run of fish.
