Rivers International Fly Fishing Championships
On 26th June 2009 the Rivers International was held on the river Taff. This is the highlight of the fishing year for river competitions and involved the Teams from England Wales Scotland and Ireland. River Competitions have been held since 1992, however the International competitions on lakes have been held since 1959. This makes 2009 the fiftieth year of the International Fly Fishing Association.
In the seventeen years the Rivers competition has been held the hosting home nations have only won on home waters four times. We are pleased to announce that in 2009 Wales were the winner on their home waters, and what a decisive win.
The top angler for 2009 on river fishing with the title of International Rivers Fly Fishing Champion of Great Britain and Ireland is Phillip Jehu. Philip is only 20 years of age and was fishing with and against anglers with many more years of experience. His knowledge of his local river shone through, however, and Merthyr Tydfil Angling Association is very proud of him.
The Welsh team won in grand style with the total number of fish caught being 92, England came second with 63, Ireland third with 60, and Scotland fourth with 33, making a total of 248 which were all returned to the river.
