Penywern Ponds: Announcement

MTAA May 17th, 2009

Since the problem at middle pond a watching brief has been maintained, to date there has been no further fish deaths. We are still awaiting a report from the Environment Agency on possible cause of the initial fish deaths; until the report is made available caution would be the best avenue to take. Please, if you fish at middle pond refrain from using keep nets and look to cleaning your tackle.

Top Pond is giving serious concerns with the wildlife and fish i.e. carp, we have experienced numerous carp deaths, the agency have been on site and they are putting some of the deaths to natural causes.
Many of the carp have been found to have airgun pellet wounds also the family of mallard ducks have been shot, the adult birds are dead but a couple of the ducklings are still on the pond. Any information on the identity of the perpetrators please relay either to the police or to a committee man and we will pass on the information. We suspect that one of the villains is approximately 16 – 17 years old the other is late 20s to early 30s both would appear to come from possibly Caerracca – Tair Twynau area.

Last year two middle aged men were seen on the pond wearing chest waders carrying powerful air rifles and we experienced the same events as this year.

If any person is seen carrying a weapon in this area alerts the authorities immediately but do not approach.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Simon Jones fished Dolygaer reservoir last Tuesday with ground bait feeder and maggot hook bait and landed around 30lb of skimmer bream and perch.

Justin Thomas and Stephen Healy have fished Dolygaer recently and caught bags of 80lb plus. The highlight for Justin was a perch of three and a half pounds.

Upper Neuadd

Brian Powles tackled this reservoir on Monday in very difficult fishing conditions with strong swirling winds making it very difficult to cast. However, after forgetting his sinking line, he persisted on a 6weight floating line to catch one rainbow trout and fourteen brown trout on a Pussy Galore, one of Brian’s secret patterns. Good catch Brian.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Andrew Coombs fished the grass bank last Sunday and caught rudd, tench, and carp. He commented that the lake was fishing well. S.F.Williams has been catching bream, roach, carp, tench, and chub. Some of the fish are quite large and he commented on how well the Crucian Carp were coming on. Stephen Healy had landed three carp to 4lb in less than an hour and was looking forward to a good days fishing. Justin Thomas was also catching tench, carp, roach.

Cory O’Connell had three tench one of 1.5lbs, and Paul Thomas had a carp of 4lb.

Penywern Ponds

Last week Paul Thomas had eleven carp from the top pond.

The Committee are also very concerned about the number of dead carp being found on the top pond. The matter has been reported to the Authorities that there are people deliberately targeting the fish with air rifles. It is important that any members witnessing this type of event contact the association immediately. Please contact any committee member available on the Committee Contacts page and do not put yourself in any personal danger.

To date we have only had a verbal result of the fish mortality, when only roach were found on middle pond. So far the results show that it was not a water quality problem as the PH and dissolved oxygen were found to be at acceptable levels.
