Weekly News

MTAA March 31st, 2009

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Jamie Daniels fished Pontsticill on the boat house side on Monday , he used a ground bait feeder and maggots to catch around 20lb of skimmers.

Cyfarthfa Lake

David Williams fished the lake on Tuesday and landed a good mixed bag of fish weighing around 15lb, he used float fished maggot and sweet corn as hook bait.

Penywern Ponds

Luke Price fished the top pond overnight last week and landed three carp; a mirror carp of 8lb 3oz and two common carp weighing 12lb 2ozs and 15lb 4ozs. He used boillie hook bait fished over a bed of small halibut pellets.

River Taff

John Taylor fished the river last Sunday at Aberfan. He landed and returned four brown trout which fell to hare’s ear nymphs on very light weight fly fishing tackle.

Welsh National Youth Fly Dressing Competition Winner and MTAA Member: Thomas Jehu

Following on from the below Weekly News item, the Association would like to say a huge congratulations to Tom Jehu for his recent 1st place victory in the Welsh National Youth Fly Dressing Competition held at Rhayader Leisure Centre on 01/03/2009.

As per the below News item, all participants to the competition were required to tie three flies – a Mallard & Claret, Silver Invicta, and a Fan-Wing Mayfly.

Tom not only took 1st Place in the competition’s Senior category, but also went on to win the Terry Fenton memorial trophy for the Best Overall Fly. This was due to the quality of tying in his Fan-Wing Mayfly.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Jamie Price and Kevin Davies fished Pontsticill last Thursday for pike. Jamie landed a good fish of 17lb 3oz on float fished Herring, while Kevin, had two good fish of 13lb 2oz and 14lb 5oz on ledgered mackerel.

Steven Williams landed one fish last week on ledgered mackerel on the boat house side.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Daniel Lewis landed a mixed bag of fish on Monday and catching mostly roach on a float fished maggot. He later changed to a ground feeder and pellet hook bait and landed a common carp of 14lb 9oz. David Lee landed two mirror carp on Sunday: one 12lb and one 13lb on ledgered boillies.

River Fishing

The river Taff is starting to pick up now after the cold weather. John Taylor fly fished the river at Abercanid on Sunday and landed seven fish using nymph patterns.

John Coombs and Dillwyn Sims fished the river Usk on the Mardy stretch last Friday. Dillwyn had one fish using a bug pattern and John landed two using a waterhen bloa.

Competitions

The Welsh Salmon and Trout Angling Association (WSTAA) held their annual junior fly dressing championship at the Rhayader Leisure Centre on Sunday the 1st March 2009.

One of the team, Phil Jehu, has represented Wales before. We are now blessed with a new Champion, Thomas Jehu (Phil’s younger brother) who won the Tiemco Youth National Fly Tying Trophy. To do this he was required to tie three flies – Mallard & Claret, Silver Invicta, and a Fan Wing Mayfly. His mayfly also won the best tied fly winning him the Terry Fenton Memorial Trophy. Terry was a well known angler from Cardiff.

Merthyr Tydfil Angling Association fished a match at Cyfarthfa park on Sunday 15th March, First place was Stewart Wilkins on peg #15 with one carp of 9lb 9oz caught on a ground bait feeder and pellet. Second was Dai Thomas with 2lb 10oz, and third was Ian Cathrew with 5oz.

Rod Licenses

All members are reminded to renew their current rod licenses as the 2008/09 rod licenses will expire on 31st March 2009.

Canoe Petition Update – March 2009

Following a recent meeting at Rhayader regarding the current issue of canoe access to all waterways throughout Wales, we would like to make both members, and non-members, aware of the seriousness of the matter.

Fish Kill & Poaching Investigations

MTAA March 18th, 2009

An incident including a fish kill and possible poaching on Penywern’s Top Pond was reported to the Association yesterday evening after a number of dead fish were spotted near the water edges as well as a large number of night lines. An investigation into this matter by the Association has already commenced.

To reiterate; poaching on any of the Association waters will not be tolerated. Anyone found to be taking part in any such activities will be dealt with severely. The Committee would like to thank the speedy response in which the issue was reported.

On a separate note, however, although we ask all members to be vigilant against cases of poaching, pollution, etc, we would like to make it clear that no member should ever put themselves in any form of personal danger, and to instead contact a member of the Committee (for contact details, click here). In cases where your personal safety is in question, please do not hesitate to contact the Police.

Open Fly Fishing Competition

MTAA March 16th, 2009

On Sunday 12th April there will be an open fly fishing competition at Penderyn Reservoir in order to aid the funding of the Welsh Youth Fly Fishing Teams.

  • Registration from 9.00am
  • Competition Starts at 10.00am
  • Competition Finishes at 2.00pm
  • Entrance Fee is £12.00 which will include your raffle

The competition will be Catch & Release with the winner being the one with the longest measure. The Youth Team Members will be there to do some measuring and returning.

It is very expensive to represent your country so please come and support us at this competition.

There are various prizes including some season tickets, and on the day, there will be a raffle for further prizes.
