The Big Skill 2011

The Association will be running a number of fishing orientated activities once again at this year’s Big Skill event and which takes place at Penpont Estate, nr Brecon, on September 3rd & 4th 2011.

We’ll be offering the ‘Full Picture of Fly Fishing’ by showing you the insects direct from the river, how anglers imitate these invertebrates via fly dressing, and you can even have a try at fly tying yourselves! We will also be offering professional fly casting lessons and, of course, there’ll be a chance for the youngsters to try out a little fly fishing on the wonderful River Usk!

This fantastic weekend event isn’t just about fishing; there will be a wide range of activities and outdoor skills workshops taking place for people of all ages to try. From basket weaving to wood turning, to stained glass, fishing, bushcraft and survival skills. There’ll be something for everyone!

For more information on this year’s Big Skill (including ticket prices, opening times, etc) please visit The Big Skill website at www.thebigskill.com. If you’re planning to attend, why not drop by and say hello, tie a fly, or have a few casts on the river? It’ll be great to see you!

Gwent Angling Society Casting Clinics – Starting Monday 20th June

June 1st, 2011

On behalf of the Gwent Angling Society, we’re happy to announce that GAS will be running another set of summer Casting Clinics starting on Monday 20th June at GAS waters near Abergavenny. The evenings will take place every Monday from 18:00 – 20:00 and are open to both GAS members and non-members alike.

Each clinic will cost £5 and will include both single and double handed casting/fishing instruction from professionally qualified instructors, all of whom are members of the Game Angling Instructor’s Association, the leaders in professional game angling and fly fishing instruction, fly tying, and guiding throughout the UK and Ireland. All monies collect during these events will go straight back into supporting the Gwent Angling Society Junior Academy which takes place each summer for those aged 16 years and over.

These are truly fantastic events and amazing value for money. Learn the tips and tricks to become a more proficient caster and angler, add a few new casts to your fishing armoury, learn a few extra fishing techniques, and have a great time with other like minded anglers looking to develop their casting and fishing skills.

If you’re interested in attending these fantastic evenings, please register you interest by visiting the Gwent Angling Society website, and where you’ll be able to obtain travel directions, etc.

We look forward to seeing you!

The Glanusk Country Fair & International Horse Trials will be hosting a number of competitions during the summer event set to take place on 30th June – 3rd July 2011 at Glanusk Estate:

There will be a number of fishing competitions on the river next to the tower, which have very kindly been sponsored by  Sportfish and  Englands Safety. These competitions will take place over the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The competitions are: Gentleman’s Salmon and Trout Distance; Ladies Salmon and Trout Distance and Under 16 Boys and Girls, Trout Distance.

The Cost to Enter is £5 per Adult, and £3 per child. We are in the planning stage of a professionals competition but this may be an informal one as we are keen to get the young, and those who dont fish onto the river!
