MTAA September 6th, 2010

Upper Neuadd Reservoir

Clive Williams fished the Neuadd on Friday 3rd September. Fishing black hoppers and a Griffith’s Gnat on a floating line Clive landed 17 brown trout, the largest weighing approximately 1lb.

Liam Price visited the Neuadd the following day and also used hoppers on a floating line and landed 12 brown trout, the largest weighing approximately 2lb.

Talybont Reservoir

Adam Davies fished Talybont on Wednesday 1st September. He used a slow sinking line with a muddler on the point and a Black & Peacock on the dropper to land 3 brown trout, the largest weighing approximately 3.5lb.

River Taff

Antony Sayce fished the Taff last week at Aberfan using a small Mepps spinner and landed six brown trout, the largest of which weighted approximately 2lb.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Daniel Jones and Daniel Davies fished the Lake on Sunday 5th September and, using a pole with sweet corn and luncheon meat hook bait (whilst feeding their secret ground bait mix), landed a good bag of skimmer bream and crucian carp.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Kevin Lewis fished Pontsticill on Wednesday 1st September. He fished at the Cwm car bay area and landed 3 pike using ledgered lampreys and sprats, the largest pike weighed approximately 10lb.

Nathan Evans fished Dolygaer reservoir recently using a ground bait feeder with worm and corn hook bait to land around 100lb of bream, the largest of the latter weighted approximately 7lb 9oz.

MTAA August 31st, 2010

Upper Neuadd

John Lewis fished the Neuadd on Friday 27th August and, using a floating line and nymphs fished on a long leader, landed seven brown trout, the largest of which weighed approximately 1lb.

River Taff

Kerry Thomas fished the river last week at Quakers yard using a spinner and landed and returned a 2lb sewin.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Mark Richards fished the lake on Tuesday 24th August. He used a ground bait feeder and maggot hook bait to land approximately 20lb of skimmer bream, tench and crucian carp.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Rhys Jenkins fished Pontsticill on Wednesday 25th August for pike, he fished at Abercriban bay on the boat house side of the res and landed three pike weighing approximately 14lb, 12lb and 8lb on ledgered sprats and lamprey.

River Taff Clean-Up with Keep Wales Tidy

Keep Wales Tidy, in conjunction with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, will be performing a river cleanup on the River Taff this coming weekend (Saturday 4th September – Sunday 5th September). Further details such as meeting locations, times, etc , are yet to be confirmed but all volunteers are welcome and it would be hugely beneficial to the Taff catchment as a whole if we can get as much interest in this event as possible. If you’re able to attend, even it is just for a few hours, it will have a massive impact. Let’s make a difference!

The Big Skill 2010

The Big Skill 2010

As per our previous announcement, the Association will be taking part in the first ever Big Skill event being held at Penpont Estate, Brecon on September 18th/19th. Visitors to the show will enjoy a wide range of traditional, rural skills whilst basking in the Autumn sun and taking in the beautiful scenery.

Merthyr Tydfil Angling Association will be offering visitors the chance to take part in fly dressing and fly casting as well as a wide range of fishing styles and techniques.

MTAA August 16th, 2010

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Dolygaer is still continuing to fish well with the low water levels with John Kinsey and his grandson, Joe Kinsey, fishing the reservoir last week and landing good bags of fish each. Joe, however, out-fished his grandfather and landed bream, roach and perch on maggots.

Nathan Lewis fished Pontsticill for pike last Saturday on the boat house side of the reservoir. He used ledgered herring to land two pike, the largest weighing approximately 14lb and a sinking lure retrieved slowly to land another weighing approximately 18lb.

River Taff

Scott Richards fished the river last Thursday 12th August from Cefn Coed bridge down to lines bridge. He landed 18 brown trout, the largest of which weighted approximately 1lb and all came to a Grey Duster dry fly.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Mike Collins fished the lake last Friday 13th August and, using a maggot hook-bait and feeder, landed roach, small bream and crucian carp.

MTAA August 4th, 2010

Upper Neuadd

David Evans fished the Neuadd on Thursday 29th July and, using a floating line and a black hopper, managed to land ten brown trout, the largest of which weighed approximately 1lb.

River Taff

Simon Llewellyn fished the river on Sunday 1st August using fly fishing gear. Simon landed approximately 25 brown trout using a grey duster with the largest weighing approximately 2lb 6oz.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Rhys Jones fished Cyfarthfa Lake on Sunday 1st August. Fishing a pole with maggot hook bait, Rhys landed a good bag of fish with a 1.5lb bream, a 1.5lb crucian carp and a nice tench weighing approximately 2lb.

Fly Casting Workshop Tomorrow Evening

Spaces for tomorrow evening’s fly casting workshop (5th August) are still available but you will need to book in beforehand. Whether you are a beginner and would like to go through the basics, an improver and would just like to iron out the odd fault, or if you would like to improve your distance casts or learn more advanced techniques such as speys, etc, all are very welcome.

Remember, all attendees MUST bring a cap, glasses and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions on the day. Feel free to bring your own fly fishing gear as this is what you’ll be using when you’re out fishing. If you don’t own a fly fishing outfit, not to worry, spares will be available during the evening.

To book yourself a space, please contact Gareth Lewis on 07540 813 399. The workshop will begin at 7:00pm at the playing fields adjacent to The Grove, Aberfan, off Aberfan Road.

Please note: all attendees must be over 4’6″ in height and any member wishing to attend who is under the age of 18 years old is required to have a parent/guardian present OR must complete a Guardian Release Form (to be submitted to a coach before the workshop begins). MTAA July 27th, 2010

River Taff

Christopher Evans fished the Taff on Friday 23rd July along the Aberfan stretch using a gold Mepps spinner to land nineteen brown trout, all of which were returned safely. Ian Jenkins fished the river on Saturday 24th July using dry flies and landed fifteen brown trout along the Abercanid stretch and, again, all were returned safely.

Talybont Reservoir

Lee Evans fished Talybont last Monday (19th July). Lee fished approximately half way around the reservoir (road side) using a floating line and a team of flies consisting of an Alexandra and a Coch-y-Bonddu to land six brown trout, the largest of which weighed approximately 3lb. All fish were returned.

Upper Neuadd

Christian Lewis fished the Upper Neuadd on Wednesday 21st July and, fishing at the top end of the reservoir with a floating line and a selection of flies, he managed to land seven brown trout, the largest weighing approximately 1lb. Again, all fish were returned.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Martin Lewis and Jack Evans fished Dolygaer on Sunday 25th July. Using ground bait feeders and maggot and sweet corn hook bait they managed to land approximately 100lb of bream and roach between them. Well done both!

Cyfarthfa Lake

Simon Harris fished the lake on Friday 23rd July for carp using a small method feeder and pellet hook bait dipped in Scopex flavouring. Simon proceeded to land seven carp, the largest being a common carp weighing approximately 14lb.

Fly Casting Workshop This Thursday

Spaces for this Thursday’s fly casting workshop (29th July) are still available but you will need to book in beforehand! Whether you are a beginner and would like to go through the basics (including correct grips, overhead casts, roll casts, etc) or if you’re an improver and would just like to iron out the odd fault, you will be made more than welcome. Also, if you would like to improve your distance casts, learn how to cast into the wind, learn a more advanced spey techniques, etc, all are welcome.

Remember, all attendees MUST bring a cap and glasses for safety reasons. Feel free to bring your own gear, as this is what you’ll be using when you’re out fishing. If you don’t own a fly fishing outfit, not to worry, spares will be on hand.

MTAA July 14th, 2010

River Taff

David Lee fished the Abercanid stretch of the river on Saturday 10th July and landed six brown trout using fly tackle. Shaun Bunce fished the Taff a couple of days later on Monday 12th July and, before he fell in and snapped his fishing rod, he used worms and spinners to land seven brown trout.

Talybont Reservoir

Antony Griffiths fished Talybont last Friday 9th July, specifically the top end of the reservoir, and landed two brown trout using a black and peacock spider.

Please note, if anyone catches a brown trout with a clipped adipose fin, please could report this to the Association as these were small fish that were stocked four years ago and we are keen to know of their progress/growth.

Upper Neuadd

Ian Evans paid a visit to the Neuadd on Sunday 11th July, he used a floating line with a pheasant tail nymph on point and a bibio as his top dropper to land nine brown trout, the largest of which weighted approximately a pound.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Mark Moore fished the lake last Saturday evening (10th July) and landed two crucian carp and five tench, he also landed a 13lb common carp and a nice 15lb mirror carp.

Upper Neuadd

Alan Price fished the Neuadd on Saturday 3rd July, he used a floating line with a black and peacock spider to land five brown trout, the largest weighing around 2lb. Andrew Davies fished the Neuadd the following day and also landed five brown trout on a floating line and black hoppers.

Talybont Reservoir

John Herbert fished Talybont last Thursday 1st July, he fished at various places on the reservoir and landed three brown trout using a slow sinking line and a muddler, the largest fish weighed around 2lb and all were returned.

River Taff

David Lee fished the river last Tuesday 29th June, he used a gold Mepps spinner and landed seven brown trout, the largest weighing around 1 ½ lb all the fish were returned.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Steven Jenkins visited the lake Friday 2nd July, he used 3lb line with a waggler float and a size 20 hook with maggot and castor hook bait to land approximately 15lb of roach, skimmer bream and a tench.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Peter Mason fished Dolygaer recently and landed an 18.5lb mirror carp on ledgered boilies.

MTAA June 29th, 2010

River Taff

David Jones fished the river on Sunday 2th June and landed four brown trout on gold Mepps spinner the largest weighing around 1 ½ lb.

Michael Jenkins also fished the river using lightweight fly tackle and dry flies last Thursday 24th June. Michael fished a small section of the river and landed 13 brown trout, the largest weighing around 1lb.

Upper Neuadd

Kevin Rees fished the Neuadd last Thursday evening, he used a floating line and black hoppers to land five brown trout and one rainbow trout.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer

With the water level continuing to fall in these reservoirs the fishing is getting better. Stephen price and Huw Davies fished Dolygaer last week, they used ground bait feeders and maggot and hook bait to land around 80lb of bream and roach each, the largest bream weighed 5lb 9oz.

Carl Price fished Pontsticill for pike last Thursday, he used ledgered sprats and herring to land three pike the largest weighing 15lb 9oz.

Cyfarthfa Lake

David Lee fished the lake on Monday the 28th of June for carp, he used a method feeder and mini boilies to land seven carp the largest weighed 11lb 3oz.

MTAA June 23rd, 2010

River Taff

The Taff is fishing quite well at the moment despite the low and very clear water conditions.

Stuart Davies fished the river recently at Aberfan and managed to land a very respectable 12 trout using a grey duster dry fly.

Christopher Lewis fished the river on Thursday 17th June from Rhyd-y-Car bridge downstream and landed 6 trout on a spinner, the largest weighing approximately 2lb.

Upper Neuadd

Ray Jones fished the Neuadd on Friday 18th June using a floating line and black dry flies and landed 8 brown trout and 1 rainbow trout.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoir

With the water levels currently dropping Dolygaer has started to fish very well.

Ian Evans and Richard Jenkins fished half down the reservoir on the road side recently and, after pre-baiting the area, landed approximately 150lb of bream and hybrids between them. A fantastic result from a stunning gem of a reservoir.

Penywern Ponds

John Clegg fished the middle pond on Saturday through to Sunday and landed 3 carp, 2 nice perch and a selection of small roach and all taken on nut boilies with a method feeder. The carp weighed approximately 5lb, 10lb 8oz and 7lb 6oz respectively, with the perch weighing approximately 1lb 80z.

Clive Roberts also fished middle pond over the same weekend and caught 2 carp weighing 13lb 8oz and 6lb 8oz respectively and 1 perch weighing approximately 1lb 8oz, all caught using plastic corn with ground bait on a method feeder.

River Cleanup with Keep Wales Tidy

Since the initial announcement of the river clean up nearly a week ago (and set to take place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th September) there has been just one volunteer submission. If you want to make a difference and are interested in attending this weekend (even if you are only able to make it for an hour) it will make a massive and very positive impact to the Taff Catchment.

Further details (specifically locations and times) will follow as soon as they are made available.

MTAA June 8th, 2010

River Taff

Anthony Sayce fished the river at Pontygwaith downstream and landed seven brown trout using lightweight fly tackle and grey duster dry flies.

Upper Neuadd

Brian Powles fished the Neuadd last Tuesday and had a fantastic day. Brian took 22 brown trout on a Coch-y-Bonddu using a floating line setup. The largest fish weighed approximately 1lb.

Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs

Matthew Davies fished Dolygaer last Sunday; he used a ground bait feeder and maggot hook bait to land a good bag of roach and perch.

Cyfarthfa Lake

Due to problems with the water supply flowing into Cyfarthfa Lake, the Committee has decided to place a keep net ban on the lake until it is resolved. Further details will follow in due course.

Andrew Davies fished the lake last Thursday using a small float, maggot and caster hook bait to land approximately 10lb of roach, skimmers and rudd. Andrew also landed a nice tench weighing approximately 2lb.

Rhys Ascott had a cracking day recently landing a 16lb linear mirror carp on ledgered sweet corn.
